The Public Astronomical Observatory at Junta House, Panjim

The P.A.O. Panjim was set up by Association of Friends of Astronomy (Goa) in 1990 and is supported by the Department of Science, Technology & Environment (Govt. of Goa). It is the first public observatory to be set up in India. It is voluntarily managed by the members of Association of Friends of Astronomy (Goa) and all activities are funded by the Government.

Our Telescopes

The Cassegrenian 14 telescope

A complete observational platform that includes an over-sized aperture OTA, the NexStar+ computer hand controller, an updated motorized equatorial mount and tripod, plus an array of accessories to get you set up and observing the Moon, planets, and especially deep-sky subjects like nebulae, galaxies, and star clusters.

10" f/4 Imaging Newtonian Astrograph w/ NEQ6 SkyScan Pro GoTo mount

Our 10" TS Imaging Newtonian TSIMN10s with its fast focal ratio of f/4 is optimized for astro photography and visual rich-field observation also. A large 88mm secondary mirror and the ultrastable 2" Monorail focuser guraantee a visual and photographic field with a minimum amount of vignetting. The mechanical design had optimal stability in mind. The the telescope is made from GSO for Teleskop-Service.

WHAT WE DO

Daily Observation

The Public Astronomical Observatory remains open every day from 7.00 to 9.00 p.m. including Sundays and holidays, during the period from 14th November to 31st May. Two of our members are always present during this period attending to a number of people visiting the Observatory. A large no. of foreign tourists also visits the observatory.

Beach Astronomy

The beach astronomy is a public sky gazing programmes conducted on different beaches of Goa like Miramar, Calangute, Baga, Morjim, Bogmalo, Colva wherein hundreds of locals and tourists gets a glimpse of the sky through telescopes.

Star Party

The annual whole night deep sky observation program conducted at mountain tops in the Sahyadri Ghat at places like Sakahli surla plateau. Here our members gets to glimpse the mysterious deep sky objects not seen from the polluted city skies.

Science Film Festival

As part of the Saturday star screen, AFA’s movie club, a week long Astro film festival is held annually wherein various astronomy documentaries and science fiction films are screened at all our centers around Goa.

School Programmes

Our members take up the presentation work of sky observation preceded by slide shows in schools and colleges around the length and breadth of the state of Goa.

We stumbled upon the observatory by chance , walking the old town and so glad we did. All the kids are super enthusiastic about astronomy and happily showed us the different constellations. Keep up the good work and the learning. The world needs lot more Astronomers, Scientists and curious minds.
